Edison, Washington

A Day Trip to Edison, Washington

Edison, is a small town, with most of the shops and restaurants located on a short curve in the road. If your partner in the passenger seat looked down at their map once, they'd miss it. But hopefully, that doesn't happen, because we had lots of fun exploring this town!

This town has that dreamy small-town feel while having most everything you need within a short distance. It has that locals-only vibe, but a friendly one, where everyone makes you feel like you're really at home. It's a short drive from Seattle, making at a great option for a weekend day trip!

First stop in the morning is the local bakery, of course: Breadfarm. They sell drool-worthy pastries and breads and their homemade graham crackers would be fabulous on summertime smores.

Our personal ALL-TIME favorite cinnamon roll was at Farm to Market Bakery, located just outside of Edison, in the small town of Bow. If you're there at the right time, you can watch the bakers roll out their giant cinnamon roll logs to slice across a huge table, preparing for the oven. A giant perk was getting to pick which of the cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven we wanted for ourselves. I do not share pastries very well, and these cinnamon rolls are so good, they made me want to fight for every last morsel. They also make generously-sized pecan sticky buns and cakes. Right next door is a restaurant called the Rhody Cafe.

After our bellies were full and all we wanted to do was nap, we walked to the Smith & Vallee Gallery to peruse their current exhibition.

This art gallery is beautiful and this exhibition truly showcased the spring hues of the nearby area perfectly. Nature, wood-grain, and water were all incorporated into the look and feel of this gallery. The quote shown above, spoke to both of us strongly, as we know how easy it can be to always be on our phones and miss experiencing the present moment.

We loved walking around town, admiring all the small touches and noting how artistic the people of Edison must be. There were actually several art galleries and a woodworking studio. All worth walking through in our opinion!

Fresh, spring flowers were blooming everywhere, a sign that we have all made it through the winter! It seems like almost every year I am left wondering if spring will actually come. Each year it seems like it couldn't have come soon enough.

Several small shops that we recommend for small trinkets, textiles, fabrics, jewelry, and souvenirs:

- The Lucky Dumpster

- Hedgerow

- Shop Curator

When you've worked up an appetite for lunch, head to The Slough for wine, charcuterie, beer, or their homemade daily soup and grilled paninis. On a nice day, you can sit outside with a view of the slough and service is provided to the garden area.

If you know me, you know that one of my most favorite things ever is wine. But what takes wine to the next level? A GOOD charcuterie plate. What makes a good charcuterie plate better than the rest? Options. A fresh baguette, mustards, fruit preserves, olives, salami, cheeses. Bonus points for pickled items. The Slough offers pickled blueberries!

Staff here is super friendly and our waitress was happy to package up our leftover charcuterie in literally the most intricate packaging job I've ever seen take-out come home in. In fact, she said it was her favorite part of her job, packaging up the leftovers for the guests to open up later like presents.

Once we could hardly roll down the street because we were so full of the good food that Edison has to offer, we drove the short distance to Larrabee State Park. (Note: does require a Discover Pass). We were happy to sit on the beach and walk around breathing in the fresh air.

This was one of the few days where everywhere else in the Pacific Northwest was experiencing cold, dreary, rainy weather, but we lucked out in finding the sunshine. I mean, come on! Look at how gorgeous this looks!

Our takeway to you is this...Don't, I repeat, don't go to Edison and enjoy a huge, ooey-gooey, cinnamon roll, or eat delicious food served by fantastically upbeat people, or look at completely interesting pieces of art.....unless you actually want to enjoy yourself immensley. Then by all means, take a day trip to Edison.

April 2019.
