What a hidden gem Sun Top Mountain is! I cannot believe I haven't been here before. I honestly hesitated sharing these photos with anyone as I wanted to keep it a secret...but some joys should be shared. As you can see, Sun Top Mountain has an old fire lookout that is supposedly open during the day when a volunteer worker is there to open it up.
The road to the trail head had some rough patches and potholes but a low clearance vehicle was able to make it at the time of this post.
If you can make it happen, coming here on a weeknight was incredible as we had the mountain top almost entirely to ourselves! You can walk the trail, or, walk the forest service road the 1 mile up to the top from the trailhead/parking lot. Views this great after only a 1 mile hike is unbelievable. We walked the forest service road instead of the trail and, since the road hugs the edge of the mountain (of course), there are views the entire mile up. There are picnic tables so I recommend packing a small, yet plentiful buffet to share with a friend or two. Sunset here is MAGIC, just bring your head lamp for the walk down!
